EXCLUSIVE: Kennedy Heiress Kathleen Townsend Sells $1.6 Million Hyannis Port Retreat for Full Ask

Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, the eldest surviving member of the Kennedy political family, has sold her Hyannis Port retreat for $1.6 million, matching the full asking price. The property was listed in May, and the sale closed quietly this week, according to public records.

The house sits in the historic Massachusetts enclave that has long been the summer gathering place for the Kennedy clan. While the compound itself remains in family hands, Townsend's property is a separate residence located nearby. It is described as a modest Cape Cod-style home with three bedrooms and two bathrooms, offering water views and easy access to the beach.

Townsend, who is the daughter of the late Robert F. Kennedy and the niece of President John F. Kennedy, has had a long career in public service. She served as lieutenant governor of Maryland and has been active in education and democracy initiatives. The sale comes as part of a broader downsizing for the 73-year-old, who has spent more time in recent years at her primary residence outside of Washington, D.C.

Local real estate agents noted that the sale at full ask reflects the enduring appeal of Hyannis Port, even for smaller properties. The area has seen steady demand from buyers drawn to its history and coastal setting. The transaction was handled by a Cape Cod brokerage, and the buyer was not identified in the filing. Townsend's decision to sell marks a rare change in the family's footprint in the village, where several generations still own homes.
