Landlords in San Francisco are once again paying tenants to move out, with buyout offers returning to levels not seen since before the pandemic. Data from the Rent Board shows a steady climb in filings over the past two quarters, with many offers ranging from twenty thousand to over sixty thousand dollars per unit. Tenant advocates say the trend is a warning sign, as buyouts often target long-term residents who may not realize the true cost of relocating in a competitive market. Meanwhile, property owners argue that the payments are a fair trade, allowing them to renovate aging buildings and adjust to current rental demand. For now, the pattern is clear: the buyout is back, but its footprint has changed, and that has both tenants and housing watchdogs paying closer attention to who gets asked to leave.
