Zillow has filed a lawsuit against Midwest Real Estate Data, a Chicago-area multiple listing service, over its plan to go national with help from real estate brokerage Compass. The lawsuit claims the deal is anti-consumer and would ultimately hide many home listings from buyers.
According to the complaint, Midwest Real Estate Data, known as MRED, struck an agreement with Compass to take its private listing service nationwide. Zillow argues this move would create a closed system that limits access to listing data for competing platforms. The result, Zillow says, would be fewer homes visible to consumers on popular search sites, forcing buyers to rely on a smaller set of tools controlled by a few industry players.
The lawsuit contends that MRED's partnership with Compass violates antitrust rules by restricting how listing data is shared. Zillow says the arrangement is designed to push buyers and sellers toward Compass agents while making it harder for other brokerages and websites to compete. The company warns that if the deal goes through, it could set a dangerous precedent for the entire real estate industry.
MRED has not yet issued a detailed public response. The case highlights ongoing tensions in the housing market over who controls listing data and how that data reaches consumers. For now, the dispute remains in court, with Zillow asking a judge to block the expansion before it takes effect.
