A growing wave of Zimbabweans living abroad is pouring money back into the country's property and farming sectors, and a surprising group is steering those decisions: digital influencers.
Social media personalities in Zimbabwe are now a major force in shaping how the diaspora invests. Through Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook, these creators showcase newly built suburban houses, sprawling tobacco farms, and irrigation projects. Their polished videos and testimonial-style posts offer a direct, emotional link to home for those living in the UK, US, or South Africa.
Real estate agents report a sharp rise in inquiries directly traced to an influencer's post. A single video of a completed three-bedroom house in Harare's leafy suburbs can trigger dozens of calls from overseas buyers. Similarly, farming cooperatives are using influencer campaigns to raise capital for equipment and land expansion, offering diaspora investors a share of future harvests.
This trend fills a trust gap. Many abroad remain wary of traditional banks and distant property listings. An influencer's face and reputation act as a personal guarantee, making the investment feel less risky. However, experts warn that the system is largely unregulated. Some influencers promote deals without proper due diligence, and there have been cases of investors losing money on projects that never materialized.
Despite the risks, the flow of capital continues. For a generation raised on social media, a trusted influencer is often more persuasive than a formal advertisement. This new pipeline is reshaping Zimbabwe's real estate landscape, one viral post at a time.
